Quite the loaded question :)
The correct answer (but also, frustrating for you I'm sure) is it depends. So many factors are involved in helping a plant be healthy and grow: type of plant, soil, temperature, humidity, location in the home, and time of year.
In the winter season, you won't see tremendous results quickly, but in the spring you should see noticeable results in a week or two.
